The 8 MDGs

At the United Nations Millennium Summit in year 2000, 189 heads of government signed the Millennium Declaration, promising to "free men, women, and children from the dehumanizing conditions of extreme poverty," with committing developed and developing countries alike to eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The goals will also tackle issues such as hunger, universal primary education, child mortality, maternal health and the spread of HIV. Specific targets have been set for each goal but many of these targets are behind schedule. The goals are as follows:

The MDGs also provide a framework for the entire international community to work together towards a common end – making sure that human development reaches everyone, everywhere. If these goals are achieved, world poverty will be cut by half, tens of millions of lives will be saved, and billions more people will have the opportunity to benefit from the global economy.
